The starting points of this paper are the concepts of modernization of a society and individual modernism. Based on these concepts, the authors have tried to construct an individual modernism scale applicable to women from the city of São Paulo, a scale intended to measure one aspect of this modernism called "malism" by the authors, that is, a system of belief and prejudices relating to female inferiority, to the existence of two separate worlds, one for men, another for women, to the existence of a double sexual morality, etc. To this end, the authors constructed a questionnaire including 50 itens related to the referred topics, 13 questions of general knowledge and 3 items intended to measure the degree of family planning. This questionnaire was administered to a sample of women from the city of São Paulo, belonging to the lower economic classes. The data collected were submitted to a statistical analysis which basically consisted of two phases: an analysis of internal consistency (validity of constructs) and a factor analysis. As a result of these analyses, an individual modernism scale is presented by the authors. It is a Lickert type scale made up by 17 questions which have higly satisfactory internal correlation coefficients and factor loadings.
