BONAMIGO, Euza Maria de Rezende  y  BRISTOTI, Nilva Carmen Postal. Enriquecimento verbal em crianças marginalizadas. Cad. Pesqui. [online]. 1978, n.24, pp.25-40. ISSN 0100-1574.

The objectives of this study were to analyse the effects of verbal stimulation on vocabulary and on the academic achievement of disadvantaged children. The subjects were 18 first grade children of both sexes, between 6 and 9 years of age from a low income neighborhood of Porto Alegre. The subjects were divided into Control and Experimental Group by random selection. The subjects were given pre and post-test that consisted of free speech during 5 minutes and a picture description. The training program was given collectively and consisted of descrimination exercises, free speech, recorded and vizualized stories, pictures description and stories told by children. Positive reinforcement was given when the response was adequate. 20 training session were administered totalling 10 hours of work. The Sign Test was used to compare the number of words said in the pre and post-test. The findings did not show significant differences in the pre and post-test of the GE. In the GC, however, there were differences, but in the opposite direction. In the other words, if the GE did not improve, the GC, without training, regressed. The Mann Whitney U Test was used to compare the post-test scores of the GE with the GC. Significant differences were found in favor of GE. The data regarding scholastic achievement, retention and drop-out problems were not sufficient to make conclusions about the program's success.
