This paper discusses sex-roles acquisition through socialization. The central idea is that behaviors, attitudes and emotional reactions which are typical of man and woman in our society are not biologically determined but culturally defined and taught to children from the moment they areborn. Social pressure leads most individuals to conform to cultural norms which are not always psychologically healthy. Evidence that parents have steretyped perceptions of newborns, as well as different socialization practices in relation to boys and girls is presented. Moreover, the major theories about sex-role acquisition through reinforcement, imitation, identification and cognitive processes), are discussed, together with the problem of choice of same-sex models.
