The study presents a description of the Brazilian students and graduate programs in Education as well as an analysis of the factors determining the retention of students in the programs. The student population studied was composed of those that already obtained their degree between January, 1972 and June, 1976 and of those that remained studying more than two years whithout finishing their studies. The data were gathered through a survey which included questionaires and interviews with coordinators of graduate programs, students and those with a Master's degree. The data were interpreted and tabulated using descriptive statistical techniques and later examined according to multiple regression analysis to verify the degree of relationship between literature and a reflection upon the subject. The population studied shows that more than two thirds of students are females, half single, half married, with an average entrance age of 34 and most of them coming from the undergraduate course on Pedagogy. Almost all students already had previous professional experience with an average weekly work load of 35 hours, most of them working as university lectures. Only a small percentage had a fellowship during their studies. The results obtained suggest that the variables which have greater influence on the students retention process are those related to the offering of compulsory subjects and pre-required courses during their first year of studies, average time dedicated to studies, underg.
