Data referring to the years of 1963 and 1976 are used to assess changes in the composition of the student population who reaches, in the State of São Paulo, the 8th and the 11th grades. The survival rate has increased and so has the proportion of lower class students enrolled at these levels. However, in spite of the changes introduced in the curricular structure of secondary education, marked social inequalities persist, as seen from the distribution of students between public and private courses, day and night shifts.
