The objective of this article is to present and discuss the main concepts of Educational Technology and some of the questions related to the nature and to the role played by Educational Technology. The introduction deals with two questions: the relationship between Educational Technologyand Education, and the interdisciplinary approach. In thefirst part the following concepts of Educational Technology are analysed: the media concept, the process concept, and the concept which undestands Educational Technology as an "innovation strategy". In the second part some of the areas of ambiguity which represent real challenges are pointed out. They can be listed like this: technology in education or technology of education; educational technology: novelty or innovation, mechanization or humanization; educational technology: reinforcement of cultural dependence or stimulus of cultural autonomy; educational technology: otimization of the irrelevant or search for relevance. The conclusion points out the different forms that may be taken by educational technology in the underdeveloped countries depending on the way it is used.
