The aim of this study was to verify the effect of an intensive program of cognitive stimulation on the performance of children of different nutritional conditions. The research had an experimental character and involved pre-school children from families of low socio-economic level, who lived in Campina Grande, Paraíba. Data was obtained from interviews with mothers and a cognitive development test (Poppovic's Cognitive Operation Test). The analysis of variance of the results showed that the nutritional conditions of the children did not interfere with their learning. The conclusion was that the low performance found among disadvantaged children might be overcome by appropriate school stimulation.
