In this paper some data about elementary and secondary education in Brazil are compared with the official goals defined for the 1975-79 period. Data includes the PNAD-76 statistics, curricular guides orientation, preschool and suppletive education. The distance between governmental goalsand the reality shows, according to the authors, the contradictions between the adopted model of economic development and the ideal of democratic education.
