This paper critically analyses the Brazilian production of books for children, emphasizing their low quality with regard to the illustrations, the kind of paper, and the binding system used, and especially with regard to the characteristics of the text itself. Exceedingly didactic, moralistic and conservative, and containing contradictory or irrelevant information, much of the existing literature deals with the child as a minor public. Comparing it with the advertising films made for children, the paper shows how these films, consumed directly by children, try to be as attractive as possible, while the books, bought by adults, respond to the needs of the adults themselves.
