The article analyses about 80 books written by european travelers who visited Rio de Janeiro between 1800 and 1850. Data about the condition of the black child are detached from the general background of the slavocrat society, including the imported slave child as well as the children born from enslaved mothers. The traveler's descriptions reveal, in a cruel way, the conditions endured by slave children, their relationships with their mothers and owners, their value as labor force and as a "merchandise".
