The author describes and analyses the general characteristics of the educational orientation that pervades the institutions that shelter deprived children, based on his professional experience at the FEBEM - State Foundation for Children Welfare. These institutions practice a repressivepedagogy, by means of isolating children from their environment, not taking in account the social context that produces their marginality, educating them with conservative principles and giving a kind of professional training that is not desired by the children themselves. The article concludes with suggestions for changes in the orientation of the programs that assist deprived children.
