This paper analyses social conventions and ideas regarding children's sexuality and their changes in different periods and various societies. It is argued that Freud, in spite of being a radical innovator, was not able to escape the influence of the repressive culture to which he belonged. Data recently collected in the city of São Paulo concerning repressive practices in low income families are presented. It is suggested that explanations of repression of children's sexuality should (a) take into account its potential of development of adult sexuality and (b) place it in the context of educational practices used in a given type of family structure, in a certain social structure.
