Based in a study made with children from a poor neighbourhood in the city of Salvador, Bahia, the author discusses the problem of child work, reporting various cases in which the work of the children is crucial to the family group survival. The article describes how the different tasks are distributed among the children according to their age and sex, and how the criteria for this distribution are affected by the family needs.
