The objectives of this work were the adaptation of a scale to measure perception of control in children (IAR) and the analysis of the behavior of the construct perception of control - as presented in Julian Rotter's social learning theory - in the Brazilian social context. The scale wasadministered in 32 fourth grade classrooms from 11 municipal public schools in the city of São Paulo, to a total of 922 subjects (469 males and 453 females) between 9 and 14 years old. There were two hypotheses: a) the results of the first administration of the instrument should be highly correlated to the results of a later administration (high reliability); b) the results obtained in the IAR scale should be correlated to the subjects' grade point average (predictive validity). The results obtained showed that the scale is loaded with social desirability and cultural biases, raising doubts about the use of the scale, and questioning the theory postulates and the value of other measurement instruments based on these postulates.
