Nowadays the economic value of education is generally acknowledged. However, it is undeniable that Brazilian colleges have been producing human resources that do not correspond to the socio-economic needs of the country. Many college graduates do not have the opportuniry to work in their fields of specialization, and have to perform functions that are completely unrelated to their academic formation. In order to obtain systematic information about the absorption of college graduates by the labor market, the authors developed a research with people graduated between 1958 and 1976 from the "Faculdade de Direito do Vale do Paraíba" (a local law school). A questionary was developed, validated and administered to a sample of this population. The results obtained support the initial assumption: there is a serious misemployment of human resources among these bachelors. The employed methodology, with minor changes, can be used in future researches that deal with the occupational situation of college graduates.
