The purpose of the study is to identify the ways of relating school and community as well as the conditions of success and failure in this relationship. In its first part it presents the study of five cases envolving schools attended by students of different SES. In its second part it relates the results of a pilot survey undertaken from a sample of both private & public schools. It concludes that the most outstanding variables explaining success and failure of the relationship school-community are the degree of community life, the human resources and facilities available to the school, the principal's qualifications, the socio-cultural differences among the students and the supervisory and teaching teams, as well as the degree of students homogeneity in relation to their SES.
