In order to raise some questions about the problem of rural education, the author presents some preliminary data from an investigation in process in São Paulo. The research has been done in urban and rural areas of one of the most developed regions of this state. It includes the analysis of secondary data, a survey of the school population and interviews with youngsters that are out of school. The results presented show a strong association between income and school achievement, and, the perception people have of school as an essential instrument for one's entry in the labor market. The author points out to the basic request of the population: a public school that provides at least the so called functional literacy in the country and in the city.
