This paper analises a Brazilian adult education program (starded in 1947) in terms of the relationships between its official results and some components of its actual functioning that lead to the questioning of these results. It shows how, on one hand, the results are just quantitative, leaving qualitative effects with no evaluation. On the other hand, the very organization of the courses where non skilled teachers were recruited and where some formal indicators of "good" performance meant marks that teachers could use for their promotion in the teaching career - could provoke a falsification of the numbers and so threaten the validity of the results presented.
