The article, based in a research with 66 elementary and secondary public schools of the State of São Paulo, tries to determine student/year direct costs. The methodology used makes possible a fair approximation in measuring a school unit cost. It is presented by a discussion of student/year cost components, which are computed in detail. Resultsare presented for the whole State, and for groups of schools, classified by: educational level, region, students per capita income, deprivation level - a classification made by The Bureau of Education -, municipalities hierarchy, number of classes, number of shifts and number of students.
