The article presents some variables that provoke the high incidence of retentions and drop-outs of students in the elementary school night shifts. The low socio-economic level of the majority of these night period students doesn't explain by itself their failures. A comparison between the day and night courses shows that there are aspects in the structure and operation of the late that aggravate the school difficulties of the poorer students.
