Official publications of the State of Mato Grosso referred to Elementary Education productivity show a very critical situation in the State as a whole. Nevertheless, these are global data, presented in terms of social averages, with no references at all to the students' socio-economicstatus. The present study is a first step in the sense ofimproving this situation. Schools in the city of Cuiabá were divided in three categories: private, state, and city schools. Our data show that private schools have a much greater productivity than official schools, while state schools' productivity is only a little bit beter than city schools. Some preliminary data are presented as to the social composition of official schools. The present study is, in fact, a point of start of a research program now being developed in the city of Cuiabá, capital of the State of Mato Grosso.
