Secondary data are used to show the extent of youth employment in different socioeconomic strata and various regions in Brazil. The main concern, however, is to indicate how working youngsters define their present a situation and perceives opportunities for occupational upgrading. This is done by using data from interviews with children and adolescents who work in the São Paulo Metropolitan Area. The conclusion is reached that, although submitted to a heavy daily schedule, which often combines school attendance in the evening with long hours of work in underpaid routine jobs, not covered by social security rights, and unlikely to lead to an occupational career, those youngsters do not resent the fact of their having to work. Rather, they seem to be proud for being able to bring home money for joint family expenses.
