This paper analyzes results of eleven international research reviews commissioned by the World Bank and the Institute of Development and Research Centre (Ottawa, Canada). It describes the evolution of research trends, indicating methodological and cultural problems. The findings related to the socio-economic status, the school resources and processes, teacher aspects, nutritional condition of students and retention of literacy are examined. Convergence was observed among the international and Brazilian research findings. The author considers that the educational research lives a moment of revalorization of intra-school factors that are approached in a contextualized perspective. The school inadequation to the reality of the students is one of the recurrent points in the findings both Brazilian and international.
