The authors discuss the academic performance of students from the rural areas of three states (Ceará, Pernambuco and Piauí) selected for the evaluation project concerning the expansion and improvement of elementary education in rural areas of northeast Brazil (Edurural Program). The sample involved students of second and fourth grade attending schools located in municipal districts receiving or not support from such program. In order to evaluate the quality of education offered by the rural school, Language and Mathematics tests were elaborated. The contents of such tests consisted of items related to the minimal knowledge which should have been acquired by the students at the end of the selected grades. The results showed that the general performance obtained was below the stipulated criterion for each grade in the two assessed areas. The situation in Mathematics was even worse than that depicted in Portuguese. The discussion of these results, without disregarding the weight of social, economical, political and cultural variables, is centered in the figure of the rural teacher, his academic skills and professional performance.
