The author intends to characterize the educational practices and services developed by institutions related to urban labor unionism in São Paulo, between 1960 and 1978. This period was divided in three phases: 1960 to 1963, 1964 to 1974 and 1975 to 1978. In the first phase the practicesof labor union education were developed mainly by agencies external to the union movement, controlled by the government, and offered sometimes to the union leaders and sometimes to the associates. The education offered to the leaders was used as a tool for maintaining the union structure controlled by the government. The courses offered to the associates were short versions of regular school courses. During the beginning of the second phase there were not many changes in the union education, except for an increase in courses for associates. But between 1970 and 1974 courses of union capacitation initiated by the more advanced unions themselves started to be created as a part of the resistance movement to the coup of 1964. These courses have the objective to serve a practice more compatible with the union movement that was trying to organize the workers. After 1975 there is a tendence of a decrease in schoollike courses, and an increase in courses, conferences, seminars and congresses concerned with the union institutions. These initiatives start to be more and more consumed by the unions themselves.
