The objective of this work was to study the relationships between performance in first grade and previous attendance to preschool in different SES groups. The study consisted of a follow up of 499 students from preschool to the end of first grade. All students went to public schools in the Metropolitan area of Chile and were of three SES levels: low (urban and rural), middle-low and middle-middle. The results indicated that, except for the middle SES level children, the students that did go through preschool entered grade school with better conditions for learning how to read and write. Among middle-low SES children, by the end of the first grade, there were differences in performance in reading, writing and mathematics, between children with and without preschool training. No differences were observed in school grades between children of all SES levels with and without preschool experience. Some implications of these results are discussed regarding projects for expansion of preschool education.
