Resumen

A sample of 250 teachers and 2.500 students from public and private schools in Brasília and satellite cities were measured in terms of teachers' characteristics and students' achievement. Teachers' characteristics were assumed to indicate professional efficiency and students grades in reading comprehension and science knowledge composed their achievement results. These dimensions were categorized by geografic location and administrative domain (public and private schools). The main objective of the study was to measure the degree of common variances shared by students' performance and teachers' efficiency, and to compare two different geografic strata (Brasília versus satellite cities) and two types of schools (private and public) in pupils' achievement and teachers' efficiency. The results showed (1) that there is a significant correlation between achievement of children and efficiency of teachers; (2) that students and teachers from private schools did better than the ones from public schools; (3) that Brasília's students and teachers did better than the ones in the satellite cities.
