This paper presents the basic characteristics of an experience in alphabetization, applied in some public schools in teh city of Mogi das Cruzes, São Paulo. The project, known as PROLESTE , was implanted and developed by public school educators and educational psychologists of Mogi das Cruzes University. Initially, one discusses the main variables related to the school failure; after, one relates the concept of project, the characteristics of the alphabetization program used and the fundamental conditions for its implantation.
