This paper briefly describes rural teaching in the state of São Paulo within the brazilian educational context. It also indicates the specificities of rural teacher's training relating them to the national reality. Work conditions in these schools are analysed mainly supported by the contributions of 1984 Fórum de Educação do Estado de São Paulo about rural public schools. Finally, it discusses the proposals for teachers training suggested by the Fórum participants considering the needs detected in the teaching system.
