This paper deals with changes in labor relations within schools. The changes discussed here indicate a shift toward capitalist relations. This claim contradicts the view which maintains that capitalist relations cannot be used to define non-material production relations wherein the act of production is not separate from the act of consumption.This article demonstrates that the process of the division of labor and the introduction of new technology in education has: 1) generated a separation between production and consumption, thereby making possible a devaluation of the reproduction of the education labor force; 2) permitted the sale of the product of educational labor independent of teacher - student contact; 3) made possible the exploitation of labor in the form of surplus value, production on a large scale thereby indicating the introduction of new forms of productive relations in education. As a result, the struggle of teachers, in particular, and the worker's struggle, in general, may be deeply affected by such changes.
