U.N. (United Nations) has declared 1985 The International Year of Youth. For this event, CEPAL (Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean) asked for a diagnosis about the situation of young people under different perspectives - its role in the dynamics of demographic tendencies, the changes in familiar organization, work conditions, schooling etc. - all for then based on census data. The Brazilian diagnosis, written by me with the help of Albertina Costa, was distributed by CEPAL and called The Youth and Structural Changes in Brazil in the 70's. This article is a summary of the dimensions studied in the work mentioned above. Its aim is to evaluate the impact of intense quantitative and qualitative changes that took place in the social and economic structure of Brazil during the 70's. These changes, in turn, had a reflection on work conditions of children (10-14 years) adolescents (15-19 years) and young people (20-24 years). In reality, this article intends to accomplish two basic and complementary tasts. The first one is to demonstrate how these sectors of the population have been conditioned to participate in the new tendencies emerged through this period. Those tendencies, which contributed to the new configuration of Brazilian society, took place in the labor market. The second task is to show these changes had put in action many mechanisms that made the access to youth identity possible for the popular sectors of the society.
