SILVA, Fátima Sampaio. Análise psicolingüística da leitura de crianças nas séries iniciais do 1º grau. Cad. Pesqui. [online]. 1986, n.58, pp.58-68. ISSN 0100-1574.

The study was designed to assess reading proficiency of 1st and 2nd grade children. The variables used to define proficiency were the child's ability to obtain meaning, to establish correct grammatical relationships during the reading process and his ability to retell the story read. These variables were derived from an evaluative reading instrument, the Reading Miscue Inventory (RMI) which is based on the psycholinguistic nature of reading. The RMI leads to a reading proficiency profile by analyzing the children's miscues and their self correction procedures. the sample was comprised by 41 subjects: 20 first graers and 21 second graders. The most important results were the following: the subjects corrected or attempted to correct 22,6% of their total miscues; the subjects corrected 65,55% of syntactically unacceptable miscues and only 12% of acceptable ones; the subjects corrected 64,85% of semantically unacceptable miscues and only 10,05% of acceptable ones; according to the subjects'means in the reading proficiency variables - comprehension, grammatical relationships and retelling - their proficiency was classified as regular. The results confirm that reading is actually a psycholinguistic process and suggest a revision of reading methodology in early grades.
