Mathematical knowledge developed independently from school instruction has been documented among children as well as among adults. However, the limits and strengths of this knowledge are not yet well known and its relationship to knowledge adquired in school remains to be clarified. This study analyzes mathematical knowledge among bookies who work in a special kind of lottery game and who had from none to eleven years of school instruction. Their performance and strategies in solving mathematical problems were analyzes at first while they solved problems at work. In a second phase they were asked to solve problems that differed from the ones they usually encounter in relation to: numbers involved, the way questions were asked, or their content. An interview explored their understanding of the probabilistic aspects of the game. Results suggest that, although mathematical knowledge may develop independently of school instruction, use of this knowledge outside the specific situations in which it occurs seems to depend on school experience. The contribution of school, however, was not found in the use of specific techniques such as algorithms to perform arithmetical operations, but rather in a more general ability to analyse and understand the relationships between the elements in the game as mathematical models that could be applied to other contents and situations.
