The papers grouped under this theme reflect either broad views or specific cases about the understanding of the socialization and the identity of Black Brazilian population. Recurrent in the presentations were the ideas of rescuring, retrieving, strengthening or making visible and ambiguous identity which has been denied, weakened by a country that makes and ensures a historical policy of assimilation. On the other hand, those speaches also allow one to appraise the extension of the Black people's endeavors towards asserting their ethnic-cultural identity. Such endeavors were also brought into discussion when the issue of their interaction with the formal school system was approached.
