SANTOS, Joel Rufino dos. Livro didático: um mal necessário?. Cad. Pesqui. [online]. 1987, n.63, pp.99-100. ISSN 0100-1574.

The central theme of this pannel is the discrimination against black people which is generated and propagated by textbooks. Not only the results of research and a bibliographical review of the national works dealing with this subject were presented, but also some suggestions pointing towards a change in the contents of such book and the reportsof the actions taken aiming at sensitizing productors and users in regard to the racism expressed by this kind of didatic material. During the debate period, controversial questions were raised, such as: "What is the actual role played by textbooks in the production and maintenance of racism?"; "Aren't the books only reflecting the actual situation of social inferiority experienced by the Black population?" Moreover, the role of mediator played by teachers in the production-reception circuit created by textbooks was emphasized.
