Abstract

GOMES, Jerusa Vieira. Do campo à cidade: as transformações nas práticas educativas familiares. Cad. Pesqui. [online]. 1988, n.64, pp.48-56. ISSN 0100-1574.

The article analyzes the changes, associated to rural-urban migration, operating on the child's socialization within the family. Empiric research was carried out with three generations of five migrant families now living at the outskirts of Carapicuíba, in Great São Paulo. The research focused on educational practices of each generation in regard to child's development, particulary the lactancy period, infancy and early childhood. Though the rural-urban move forces the migrant to a continuous identity reconstruction, it is found that incorporation of new cultural patterns does not necessarily imply destruction of the old ones: both are at work within the individual. Therefore ambiguity is the basic feature of the third generation's life experience, a generation which, though socialized in town, is the heir of a rural cultural tradition.
