This paper exposes some results of a research about Associação Brasileira de Educação (A.B.E.) and its pedagogical project in the 1920's and 30's. It suggests some corrections to the dominant interpretations in educational historiography about those years. It states that discredit upon alphabetization campaigns and valorization of what was thenmeant by "integral education" did not mean a despoliticization of educational subjects. On the centrary, they were politicized in a new way. Educational campaign is included in a wide project of reform of values and habits which grouped physicians, hygienists and engineers to educators. It is shown that programs of school and society modernization were subordinate to projects for social control, through the theme of work organization. This theme is articulated to the project of school reorganization based on a factory model and is included in an authoritarian nationalistic project.
