Based on interviews with workers in Great São Paulo, the article investigates career patterns among men and women from lower social strata, by examining their expectations, upward mobility and search for professional qualification. The contradictions between their plans and the determinants of labour market lead to the discussion on how self-employment and hired work are valued, as well as to the discussion about working class identity in a so-called egalitarian society with its promises of social mobility. The author is concerned with new directives for Career Counseling at highschool level.
