A brief view of the methods for teaching reading and spelling shows their diversity and evolution. The intention here however is not that of engaging in the polemics about suitable methods. The present shift of the debate, from a search for the "best" method into general criticism of any method (which eventually leads to condemning formal education as a whole) is of serious concern for Latin America, where schooling remains the most effective means of combating illiteracy.
