Relying mainly on readers' letters published in the English daily newspaper The Spectator, this article aims at forwarding two suggestions: first, that by following the dialogue among people of different backgrounds and interests sponsored by the press, female readers discovered a common ground of problems, ideas, and wishes; second, that English common-women in early 18th Century were not passive and blind believers in the traditional subordinate role of women in society.
