Social functions of high school in contemporary Brazil are approached referring to the contradictions between the development of new productive forces and the relations of production in periphery capitalistic social formations. This brings out two groups of issues. The first relates to the need of improving Brazil's unfavorable situation in international division of labour. In this perspective, high school is part of basic education and should provide to all citizens the basic elements needed to master modern production process and to understand historical conditions under which science and technology are produced, as well as access to humanities and arts. The second group of issues concerns class character of Brazilian society. In order to assure a fairer distribution, among the now exploited segments of society, of the benefits of change in the country's conditions, high school should offer all citizens the necessary instruments to struggle for their social, political and economic interests, aiming at an egalitarian society.
