We here sum up the main issues of a case-study done in the scope of a larger Program for the Evaluation of University Reform (funded by CAPES), aiming to understand "real conditions under which production and dissemination of knowledge take place within the higher education system". The relationship between teaching and research, defined by law as indissoluble, can be better understood as a project of both individual professors and the institutions to which they belong. Through the analysis of 40 professor-researchers' speech, from the field of Biology, Physics, Language and Social Sciences, we investigate the way explain their everyday practice within the (public) University of the State of Rio de Janeiro; this in turn can only be explainable in terms of the wider social practices of Brazilian society and the history of its institutions of higher education and scientific research.
