Gender relations, as perceived and experienced by women from a poor district of the outskirts of São Paulo, are here analyzed through the division of roles in the family. Viewed as "natural", such division lies on women's symbolic identification with home, and men's with the street; the two universes are ruled by different moral codes, from which derive deviance and accusations over both men and women. The analysis argues that gender relations bear on two principles: reciprocity, which establishes the complementary roles for men and women; and hierarchy, which sets the masculine authority over the family. Family, in turn, shows up as these women's basic reference in the construction of social identity.
