The article follows the spreading of the educational system in the state of São Paulo during the First Republic (1889-1930), pointing to the fact that, if republican educational ideals were intended to reach all children, the adopted policies during the period clearly favoured urban populations in detriment to rural ones who, though being the majority, were then considered refractory to formal schooling.
