By using the family life cycle approach, it was possible to identify the arrangements through which household units of Great São Paulo have survived in the beginning of the 80's, in a context of recession and economic crisis. Based on data collected by DIEESE (an inter-union agency of socio-economic studies) in 1981, this article shows how different kinds of families - in different moments of their life cycle - have, or have not managed to locate themselves above poverty or scarcity levels of living conditions.
