The article discusses female responses to sex-role stereotyping in different social classes. In opposition to the prevailing view of society's unilateral imposition of values and attitudes that are internalized by girls, it is argued that the construction of gender identity involves a constant process of accomodation and resistance. Such process is analyzed as active responses of women to contradictory sex-role ideologies, and illustrated by empiric data from observation and interviews of 5^th grade working class and affluent children.
