Male perceptions and experiences of the domestic domain are compared with female perceptions and experiences under matrifocal conditions, through data collected in the poor neighborhood of Coelhos, in Recife (PE, NE of Brazil). Expectations of a strong male dominance are counterposed bya reality in which the base for continuity and security ofthe domestic group is constructed on the female side. Using the idea of developmental cycle of the domestic group and focusing on conjugal unions and separations, it is argued that gender is a differentiating element in the defining of how domestic cycles are lived and how "the household" is seen as part of male and female individual life strategies.
