The construction of religious female vocation in here analyzed under three angles: that of peasant families where most nuns come from, that of the nuns' themselves - for whom the convent opens the possibility of individual growth - and that of the Catholic Church and its social reproduction needs. Based on empirical observation in convents in the South of Brazil, the construction of the nun's identity is investigated by focusing on the initiation rituals and the transmission of values such as work, sanctity and hierarchy.
