Complex society with its cultural diversity is founded on reading and writing. In order to understand how illiterate people view themselves in this society, the research has followed ten illiterate adults of different occupations, religiousness and sex, living in Porto Alegre (RS). Close2-year contact and the analysis of their speeches and life histories allowed to assess their values and attitudes toward work and situations involving property ownership, inheritage, civil rights or commercial commitments, as well as their views on schooling and their religious beliefs, in the case of two protestants whose beliefs are based on Bible's written word. It is them possible to see how social space built and ruled by literate culture is experienced through orality. The illiterate's vision of world draws on this experience of the literate world in which he or she takes part and from which they make clearly arouse incoherence and conflicts.
