On which basis can teacher's role identity be constructed, considering the scarce conditions of Brazilian public education? Mostly based upon Habermas's theory of communicative action - where identity is constructed in the interaction with the other, and where the professional role is central to this construction - the article seeks to answer that question through the analysis of speeches and reports by a group of nine schoolteachers from public schools in Great São Paulo. The analysis points to the need of teachers' overcoming the private sphere and constructing an identity in interaction with their peers. It is thus stressed that interaction groups of teachers be formed in schools where headmaster and coordinators engage in a true commitment to the education of their students.
